Portfolios writing are really troublesome, you have to know from the moment being admitted to discharge.Although you learn and reflect at the same time, but I think all these also can be done in other ways.
For me,I think a better way of learning is through viva assessment, rather than writing down in a paper. For instance,if a patient came in with aecoad, what are the acute and long term management for the patient?if we do not know thaw answer, only then we need to write it in a piece of paper and submit to the tutor.
Last week,I went to oncall with my. Friends together with a lecturer. It is rather good experience as the lecturers makes it like a short case style and we discuss the theory and practical point of clinical medicine from there.I think that's another cool way o learn medicine. In fact,i just realized there are official websites where there is an active online interaction between lecturer and student, which is another good way for us to learn.
Medicine isn't about sitting down and writing a good portfolio, medicine is about seeing patient and get involve in managing them on the spot,of cause with some guidance from the seniors and superiors.
Again, instead of writing portfolio,I refer we discuss some practical problems tht a houseman will fade in the future, besides consolidate our theory knowledge and clinical skills. Also,if possible,I would like to involve more in terms of managing the patient.Procedures sun as venupuncture and setting up branula must be practiced til perfect before we step into worki g life.
How I wish I can spend more time on learning in hospital and brushing up my clinical competency instead of sitting in my room typing out my reports.
